Steinbeck的原著是横跨三代人的melodrama《我的女友妈妈》其实更适合限定剧的篇幅因此可以理解电影聚焦于Cal和Aaron两兄弟在叙事上因为没有足够的背景build-up《我的女友妈妈》其实是有过于分散的问题了然而James Dean叛逆忧郁的气质彷佛有种魔力让你愿意时刻关注他举手投足间情绪的变化/发泄这样的“浪子回头”或许很适合当时的Dean但是他青涩甚至略显生硬的演技其实也非常明显当本片因为James Dean英年早逝而被深刻地打上他本人的标签后并不被广为人知的是 Jo Van Fleet扮演的Kate/Cathy虽然都是相对简短的appearance却精准地把握了人物的矛盾内核完完全全地steal the show而她与Dean在办公室借钱的对手戏也是电影种the most significant highlight.
